The OILAN is an oil moisture analyzer, which continuously measures the moisture content of lubrication oil. Oil moisture trends support preventive maintenance programs, and can also be used to detect and identify problems such as heat exchanger leaks in their early stages.

By using the distinctive spectral characteristics of each oil, two measurement frequencies are used to measure the absorption of infra red light in a sample. One of the measurement frequencies is selected to coincide with the spectral characteristics of water.

The OILAN passes an oil sample through a mesuring cell, where absorption measurements are made at the reference frequency as well as at the measurement frequency. The relative difference between the two measurement channels is used to determine the moisture content of the oil, while the reference channel compensates for measurement changes resulting from suspended particles and other oil contamination. To maximize stability, the detector is temperature stabilized.

Even very small quantities of water in lubricating oil can have a significant negative impact on bearing performance and bearing life. The OILAN can be used to measure very low moisture content in lubricating oil, to provide an early warning of potential moisture problems in the oil.
